Successful hockey teams are typically made up of a variety of different players. There are the goal scorers and the playmakers. There are the ‘team first’ guys, who do everything they can to push their teammates forward. And there are the congenial types that help build a team’s culture and keep things fun. It is rare for a team to have one of each of these types of players on the roster, let alone a single player who possesses all of these qualities. We at the Shamrocks are quite lucky and privileged to nominate one such player, Riley Johnson, for the Hobey Baker High School Character Award.
Riley is a fantastic hockey player. He has a knack for possessing the puck, incredible vision, and the skills to make just the right move, pass or shot for any situation. As a result, he leads our league in scoring (42-27-69). While Riley’s talent is evident, it is his work ethic that really separates him from his peers. On every day that ends in ‘Y’, Riley is doing something to make himself better. He listens to his coaches and does what is asked of him. And then he pushes and pulls and (when necessary) drags his teammates along with him.
This season, the Shamrocks players elected Riley as their captain. He leads his teammates by example, and the team has a collective attitude of positivity and determination as a result. No matter the situation, winning or losing, facing a chippy or downright dirty opponent, running away with a game, the Shamrocks rise up because Riley does. He respects the sport and all of its participants. He is a young man of tremendous character and truly deserving of the title ‘Hobey Baker winner’
