I am proud to nominate Joseph Primiano for the Hobey Baker High School Character Award. Joseph is a 4-year senior at Culver Military Academy. Culver’s student life program (i.e. the military program) is essentially a leadership laboratory, and Joseph has established himself as a premier leader in the school. From the beginning of this year, he has served on the regimental staff—the highest level of leadership among our corps of cadets. The skilled he honed as a cadet leader have been seamlessly transferred to his impact on our Varsity A hockey team. When I interviewed each player three weeks into the season to ask whom they saw as a potential captain, Joseph was a unanimous choice. His approach is not hierarchical, but rather one of service-leadership in which he models best behaviors and habits for the younger players around him. He does so in an even-keeled, approachable manner that merits respect from his peers and coaches.

On the ice, Joseph is having a remarkable season, leading our team in goals (20), points (35) and plus-minus (+38) while accumulating only 8 penalty minutes in 28 games. While this isn’t an award centered on scoring, his overall statistics represent the fast, aggressive, honest, and clean game that he plays. We are lucky to have a young man like Joseph in our midst, and we can’t wait to see life of consequence that he’ll live after his time at Culver.
