Countdown to Hobey:

Shane Laskey

2022 | South Carolina | BOYS

Fort Mill | Ice Jacekets | BOYS

Shane Laskey is a 2 year member of the varsity. When he came to the team, we had just had a season where we had 8 players who had never played, basically save the 18/19 season. We had just 8 skaters from the prior year due to graduation. A season where with those 8 skaters, the Jackets lost the final in OT.

Shane is emblematic of the short tradition of Fort Mill hockey. A player without a lot of experience, but a player we have to have in order to survive in a small county compared to the other teams in the league. Shane isn’t the biggest guy, but his grit and willingness to throw himself into any situation makes him stand out. Last season he was able to contribute in many ways including on the scoreboard in some close games. He jumped in to defend a teammate where he was the much smaller player. Being a newer player, there were many games where he didn’t see much ice but he kept coming, never complained and gave his all when he got out there. His teammates couldn’t help but pick it up when they saw him getting it done. Again losing by a goal in the finals.

This year has been another story, with the restructuring of the league, Shane was looking forward to playing Palmetto. When the rules changed regarding 8th graders and Fort Mill couldn’t field a team, he was forced to play in a vastly upgraded league. To his credit, he sucked it up, came in and contributed. Always there and always working, Shane is an inspiration to the program.
