I have had the privilege of coaching Hayden Witzke on his high school hockey teams for the past four years. What separates Hayden from other players is his work ethic and ability to bring levity and humor to even the most challenging situations. Hayden’s teammates know they can depend on him to show up on time, put in the work, and push them to be better by providing honest, humorous feedback. Hayden holds himself to a high standard both on and off the ice, and isn’t afraid to do the unpopular thing in order to maintain his integrity. On the ice, Hayden is willing to accept responsibility without being asked, and manages to lead his teammates by example, showing them what to do instead of telling. He respects everyone playing the game, displaying outstanding sportsmanship on the ice. Hayden is persistent, and refuses to give up, even when the odds are stacked against him, and this positive, gritty attitude inspires his teammates to persevere in the face of adversity. Hayden’s willingness to go above and beyond for his teammates exemplifies the values represented by the Hobey Baker Award. Over the last four years, I have seen firsthand the love Hayden has for the game of hockey, and this drive paired with his integrity and character make him an invaluable member of our hockey team.
