Each year, we hear from coaches, players, and parents the satisfaction of being recognized for embracing the values the game teaches – coachability, strength of character, integrity, commitment, teamwork, community building and outstanding sportsmanship.

Northwest Ice Hockey is proud to select Jimmy Blurton as its 2018 – 2019 Hobey Baker High School Character Award winner. Jimmy has consistently demonstrated and embraced those values and characteristics this award recognizes. For nine years on the ice, Jimmy constantly learned from his coaches and his teammates alike. He never hesitated to perform whatever role he was asked to complete on the ice (defense, penalty killing, power play, etc.), was the ultimate team player, and continually demonstrated to his teammates a “can doâ€_x009d_ attitude. He routinely demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the ice towards players, coaches and officials alike. Jimmy received one penalty for 2 minutes – during his Junior and Senior seasons combined!

While his on-ice values and character were noteworthy, Jimmy’s strength of character, integrity, commitment and community building were best demonstrated in his off-ice activities. As an Ulysses Scholar, ACES Scholar and a National Honors Society Scholar, Jimmy’s commitment to his studies resulted in a 4.09 Grade Point Average and acceptance into the University of Maryland. Yet, the best demonstration of character was Jimmy’s work with Operation Smile. He was a founding member of the Northwest Operation Smile chapter that worked throughout the school year to raise monies for basic dentistry services and more complex cleft palate surgeries around the globe in third world countries. Closer to home, Jimmy also served as a certified pool life guard and community pool manager ensuring swimmers of all ages were safe.

Whether on or off the ice, Jimmy demonstrated the values and character Hobey Baker demonstrated in academics, in athletics and as a squadron leader in WWI.
