Matthew Simonis
2019 | Michigan | BOYS
Forest Hills Central | Rangers | BOYS
Matthew Simonis is what high school athletics should be about. He did not make the Varsity hockey team his first three years and came out this year hoping to secure a spot as a goaltender. We had other goalies try and and Matthew was offered a team manager position. After showing up every day for the first month helping move pucks at practice, filling up water bottles, loading the bus on game day and doing all of the important roles a team manager does we as a team decided to give him a uniform and dress him for an away game. He played the 2nd period of a game not allowing any goals in that period. Matthew will dress on Senior Night and it will be emotional for all parties. Thus far he has only played the one period and still has a glowing smile on his face every practice and game. I will get him in somehow in the final regular season game on senior night as I have never coached a player more deserving of playing in front of his home fans and our community/team. Matthew is a once in a lifetime student athlete and could not find a more deserving person for the Prestigious Hobey Baker Award.
