Team Leadership Characteristic: Justin’s leadership on and off the ice serves as a positive example for the Atholton Raiders, as well as the other hockey programs, school activities, and the local community.
As the Team’s Varsity Captain in 2018-19, and Alternate Captain for two seasons (2016-17, 2017-18, Justin provided a unique blend of leadership over an extended period of time. He combined skill, sacrifice for the betterment of team strategy, and the ability to communicate and positively influence all players on the team towards the common pursuit of team goals. He is well respected by his Atholton teammates and coaching staff for his calm demeanor, exceptional fortitude and mental toughness, and mentoring skills with teammates. For four months out every year for four years, Justin selflessly spent his extracurricular time teaching special needs youth and adult hockey players, ages 5 through 60, with the Washington Ice Dogs hockey program. Justin is well-rounded and also performs well academically accruing an over 3.5 grade point average, enrolled in 13 Honors courses, including Advanced Placement Micro/Macro Economics, Psychology and Statistics. Justin achieved honor roll for his grades for three straight years.
Hockey Skills: Justin led by example on the ice as one of the team’s critical hockey defensemen. In 2018-19, his 12 goals and 3 assists were second for the team and placed him in the top 15 percent for points scored in Howard County. His demonstrated skills were crucial in helping Atholton advance to the Howard County playoffs and state playoffs in previous seasons. As a varsity member of the Atholton team for all four years of high school, Justin has played different positions throughout the year depending upon where he was needed. As a freshman, Justin and his teammates had an exciting Maryland State High School playoff run which ended on semifinal loss to eventual State Champion Winston Churchill High School. As a player on the Howard Huskies Ice Hockey Club travel program throughout his high school years, Justin earned a Most Valuable Player (MVP) for one of his teams.
Work Ethic: Currently, he is the President of the Atholton’s Chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) with the ambition of mentoring fellow students and motivating members to become future leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management careers. For 40 weeks per year for 4 years, Justin participated in activities as a four-year member of the BBYO to actively promote Jewish cultural enrichment, fraternity and community impact. Also, he is employed as a Columbia Association lifeguard in addition to the numerous other activities he participates in. Justin also found time beyond hockey to play three years of Varsity golf, earning the Coaches Award in 2017, as well as playing four years of Varsity and JV Lacrosse, including selection as a Team Captain. The distinctive accomplishments of Justin Silverstein reflect great credit upon his school, community and teammates.
