Medfield High School Girls Varsity Ice Hockey | Warriors | GIRLS
I would like to select Olivia Pietersen for the 2018 Hobey Baker Award for the Medfield Warrior Girls Varsity Ice Hockey team. I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Liv over the past 2 years and think this award is extremely fitting for her dedication, commitment to excellence and care she has demonstrated to make herself and those around her the best they can be.
Liv joined our team as part of a co-op with Norton High School. From the first time she set foot on the ice as a Warrior, I knew she was a competitor. Liv is the type of player that will make whatever sacrifice is necessary for the good of the team. She has been an anchor at defense and has stepped up as a leader both on and off the ice for our team. This drive and sacrifice earned her Defensive Player of the Year for the 2016 – 2017 Medfield Warrior season.
As a coach, you rely on those girls who can rise up in the face of adversity and be an example for others to dig a little deeper. Liv is this player for us. This season, she played every game with a hurt wrist. Although at times she would wince in pain, she never let this deter her from performing at her absolute best. Never once did she complain to me or ask to sit out. She realized the team needed her leadership on the blue line, beared down and toughed it out. I commend her for this as I know playing through injury takes an extraordinary amount of mental toughness. This is what makes Liv such a great competitor. She stops at nothing to get the job done.
Equally notable is Liv’s commitment to her community. She not only wants success for herself but also to extend a hand to those around her. This includes participating in the following:
Norton Youth Baseball Softball:
– Clinic (4 Years)
-Season Opener Events Volunteer (3 years)

-12u and 10u Clinic (2 Years)
-Golf Tournament Volunteer (12 hours)

St. Mary’s Church (3 Years)
Mass Dynamites Softball:
-Helped during 10u practices (2 years)

Although Liv is graduating in May and will not be on our team next year, I know she will continue to excel in whatever she puts her mind to. I look forward to seeing where her path takes her as she moves to the next chapter of her life. I know she will continue her successes and continue to have a positive impact on those around her.
