Knute is the ultimate teammate, which is shown through his willingness to do anything for his team. The most easily visible ways are blocked shots and hard backchecks – selfless work that doesn’t show up on the scoresheet. Beyond that, though, Knute has always set an example of sportsmanship and work ethic through his off-season work and the character with which he carries himself away from the rink. He is a pure scholar-athlete in every designation of the title as evidenced by his above-4.0 GPA and his commitment to helping multiple community service programs such as Habitat for Humanity and the PB&J Outreach program.

He always carries himself with the acknowledgement that he represents himself, his school, and his family. As a hockey player and as a person, Knute O’Brien embodies the character values that are honored by the Hobey Baker award.
