Michael Yochum is a Senior serving his 2nd year as Team Captain for our Varsity squad. Some would say that he was chosen to be captain because he is the best player on the team, had the best stats or was a two-time All-Star selection but they would be wrong. Mikey is our Captain because of his hard work and unselfish play. It doesn’t matter who he is on the ice with, he has the ability to elevate their game. He plays in every situation and is a role model; especially for our underclassmen. For the last several years now, Mike has volunteered with his teammates at the Try Hockey for Free events helping the next generation of players fall in love with our sport.

Unfortunately, Mike’s season ended about half-way through the season this year when he tore his ACL. Even while injured, Mike was selected to the ADHSHL (Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League) All-Star game. The ADHSHL has 29 teams at the Varsity level and Mike was selected because his stats were still better than others who had played more games. No matter how heated the game, Mikey stays cool. Even after a season ending hit that tore his ACL, Mikey waited after the game, in pretty severe pain, near the dressing rooms and shook hands with the opposing team as they came of the ice, glove off, telling the opposition “good game.â€_x009d_

Mikey is also a very disciplined student who has his priorities in order. In addition to playing Hockey 3-5 times a week and working part-time, he carries a 3.9 GPA (4.13 weighted) and they are all tough classes like statistics and A.P. courses. He is ranked 37th out of 232 students in school. Michael recently placed 3rd in a DECA business competition for emerging leaders and entrepreneurs and is headed to their International Career Development Conference in Atlanta!

Mikey is a natural leader and critical thinker whom his piers look to as such. He is also generally happy-go-lucky, positive and has a good sense of humor with the ability to laugh at himself. Michael Yochum personifies the Hobey Baker Award.
