Michael Strobel
2018 | Maryland | BOYS
Northwest Ice Hockey | Jaguars | BOYS
Northwest Ice Hockey is proud to select Michael Strobel as its 2017-2018 Hobey Baker High School Character Award winner. Michael has consistently demonstrated and embraced those values and characteristics this award recognizes. For nine years on the ice, Michael has constantly learned from his coaches and his teammates alike. He never hesitated to perform whatever role he was asked to complete on the ice (penalty killing, checking line, etc.), was the ultimate team player, and continually brought a can do attitude to the team. While playing his senior season Michael received zero penalties for zero minutes. He routinely demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the ice towards players, coaches and officials alike.
While his on-ice values and character were noteworthy, Michael’s strength of character, integrity, commitment and community building were best demonstrated in his off-ice activities. Michael’s commitment to his studies resulted in a 4.24 Grade Point Average and acceptance into the University of Maryland’s Scholars Program studying computer science. Yet, the best demonstration of character was Michael’s work with the Guiding Eyes for the Blind program where he was responsible for all aspects of care, basic obedience, and socialization of a puppy for 8 weeks through 16 months of age. Michael raised a wonderful Labrador retriever puppy, named Eddie, and as result of Michael’s commitment and working with Eddie as a team, Eddie is now a working guide dog for the blind in Tennessee. Whether on or off the ice, Michael demonstrated the values and character Hobey Baker demonstrated in academics, in athletics and as a squadron leader in WWI.
