2023 Winner – Adam Fantilli  University of Michigan

The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Committee announced today the 2023 recipient of college hockey’s top individual prize is Adam Fantilli from the University of Michigan. The announcement came during a live broadcast on NHL Network and hobeybaker.com.

Adam Fantilli is a freshman who made an immediate impact when he came to the University of Michigan this season. The Nobleton, Ontario native has been one of the most electric players to watch in college hockey with his knowledge of the game and offensive skillset. 

Fantilli is a force to be reckoned with whenever he is on the ice. This season, he played on the power play, penalty kill, took big faceoffs, and was on the ice in all end of game situations.  His combination of skill, hockey sense, and compete has impacted the game in all areas when he’s been on the ice.

He was a vital piece to the Wolverines trip to the Frozen Four, and is the NCAA point leader with 65. His impressive numbers don’t end there as he is tied for first in the nation in goals with 30, fifth in assists at 35, and leads the nation in points per game with a 1.81 average. 

The Big Ten named Fantilli Freshman of the Year, First Team All Conference, and to the All Freshman Team. In addition to his standout freshman season at Michigan, Fantilli helped lead Canada to a gold medal at the 2023 World Junior Championships, and had five points in seven games. At 18 years old, he is expected to be a top three pick at the 2023 NHL Draft. 

Hobey Baker was the legendary Princeton (1914) hockey player known as America’s greatest amateur athlete over one hundred years ago. He redefined how the game was played with his coast-to-coast dashes in an era when hockey was contested by seven players and no forward passes. Baker, a member of the U.S. Army’s Air Corp, died testing a repaired aircraft at the end of World War I after he had completed his military service. The Hobey Baker Award criteria includes: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements. Fantilli was selected from a group of ten finalists by a 30-member selection committee and online fan balloting.

Logan Cooley

University of Minnesota

Logan Cooley entered the University of Minnesota for his freshman season with a compete level and skating ability that have made him one of the most exciting players to watch in college hockey this season. Cooley ranks second nationally in scoring with 57 points and leads the nation in assists at 37. He also leads all NCAA players with a +37 rating. He is 5th in Minnesota history in scoring by a freshman, and has the most points by a first-year player since Darby Hendrickson in 1991-92. During the regular season, Cooley led all Big Ten players by earning five Star of the Week honors. He was named to the Big Ten conference’s All Freshman Team and First Team All Conference. The freshman forward was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes third overall at the 2022 NHL Draft.

Matthew Knies

University of Minnesota

Knies has the size, strength, power, and speed that he uses consistently to make him a key player on the ice. A player who thrives on special teams, the sophomore has produced six power play goals and the team’s only two shorthanded goals. He has come up clutch in big moments with seven game winning goals which is the most in the nation, and were all scored against teams that ranked top 15 in the nation. Three of his seven game winning goals have come in overtime, making him one of only five players in program history to do so, and the only player in program history to do it in one season. Knies was honored at the end of the regular season as the Big Ten Player of the Year and First Team All Conference. 

2023 TOP 10 FINALISTS

Sean Farrell

Harvard University

Known for his speed and for his 200-foot game, Farrell has been a force to be reckoned with this season. He’s produced 51 points in 31 games and sits third in the nation in scoring. The Hopkinton native was named the ECAC Player of the Month twice this season. 

Collin Graf

Quinnipiac University

After transfering from Union College, Graf has been a vital piece of the Bobcats team this season. He currently sits second in the nation in scoring with 54 points and in assists with 34. He has played 16 multiple point games, and has been awarded the ECAC Player of the Month three times this season.

Lane Hutson

Boston University

A dynamic puck-moving defenseman, Hutson leads all blue-liners with 44 points in 34 games. He made history this season by becoming the first defenseman to lead Hockey East in scoring. He was named to the Hockey East First Team All Conference and All Rookie Team. To add to his accolades, he also was named Rookie of the Year and the Hockey East Scoring Champion. 

Devon Levi

Northeastern University

Devon Levi is a competitive, athletic, and disciplined goaltender. He has the best save percentage in the nation at .933 and is a Hobey finalist for the second straight season. He was awarded multiple accolades in Hockey East, including Goalie of the Year, Player of the Year, and First Team All Conference. Levi won the 2022 Mike Richter Award and is a finalist again this year. 

Yaniv Perets

Quinnipiac University

For the second consecutive season Perets leads the nation in goals against average; compiling a 1.52 GAA this season. He has nine shutouts, the second most in the nation, and a save percentage of .927 that is ranked fifth in the nation. He has the highest win percentage in the nation with only three losses in all 36 games he’s played. This is the second straight year the Quebec native has been named a Top 10 finalist, and is another Richter Award Finalist. 

Blake Pietila

Michigan Tech University

Pietila has played in 36 of 38 games for the Huskies this season, with ten of those games ending in a shutout. The Howell native has a .929 save percentage which is the third best in the nation, and he has the second most wins in college hockey this season at 23. Pietila was named CCHA Goalie of the Year and CCHA First Team All Conference. He is also a Richter Award finalist. 

Jason Polin

Western Michigan University

Polin is playing his best season of hockey in his senior year. He leads the nation in goals with 29 in 38 games. The Holt native has recorded five hat tricks this season, and his 29 goals have set an NCHC conference record. He has been named First Team All Conference.
